MHSboys unanimous No. 1 team in Class AAA poll

Morgantown, Oak Glen and Gilmer County remained No. 1 in their respective classes in The Associated Press boys high school basketball poll Sunday. Unbeaten Morgantown (19-0) received all 10 first-place votes in Class AAA from a statewide media panel. Woodrow Wilson moved from No. 3 to No. 2 after winning four times last week. Huntington improved two places to No. 3 after beating South Charleston, which fell two spots to No. 4. They were followed by Martinsburg, St. Albans, Hedgesville, George Washington, Robert C. Byrd and Parkersburg South. Unbeaten Oak Glen (20-0) won twice last week and received nine first-place votes in Class AA. Gilmer County remained No. 1 in Class A despite losing to Ravenswood. It received eight first-place votes and No. 2 Charleston Catholic earned the other two.

* Nitro overtook South Charleston for the No. 1 position in Class AAA in the final Associated Press girls high school basketball poll Sunday. Sissonville returned to the top of Class AA, while Mount de Chantal remained No. 1 in Class A. Morgantown was No. 3 in Class AAA, followed by Capital, Wheeling Park, Hedgesville, Parkersburg South, University, Huntington and newcomer George Washington.

* Oak Glen's Luke Samples and Nitro's Megan Withrow were named The Associated Press state high school basketball players of the week Sunday. Samples averaged nearly 27 points in wins over Tyler Consolidated and Madonna. He made the winning basket in the c losing seconds to beat Tyler Consolidated. Withrow earned the girls honor for the third straight week and for the fourth time this season. She averaged 35 points in wins over Cabell Midland and South Charleston.
