MORGANTOWN HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL RECORDS FROM 1914 TO 2014 Updated 4/14/2014

This history has been compiled over the last five years by going to the Morgantown High School Library and the WVU Regional History Museum. Although it is not completely accurate it is a pretty close representation of Morgantown High Schools basketball history. Sources in the libraries include The History of Morgantown High School 1882-1935, The New Dominion paper, The Morgantown Post paper and The Dominion News. At times it was hard to find information because there were missing yearbooks at the school library so I had to go to the WVU library microfilm room to look at The Dominion News and Morgantown Posts papers to see what happened in the missing years. Some of the records between sources do not match but I did find many post season games in th papers that were not listed in the yearbooks. So far I have not been able to find records for any teams from 1915-1918. I also have talked to various people like the late Jack Feck, also Chester Brooks, Tom Yester, Jeff Hoffman, John Ellis, Tom Zinn, Lindsay VanVoorhis, Dick Parsons, Mo Roberts and many others. A link to Coach Tom Yesters record is on his coaches page. I still have many questions to be answered about some years' records, players, and coaches but I wanted to release what I have. So here it is. If you have any information, corrections, or questions please email me at Swiftyshaver@yahoo.com. State tournament history link click here.

The following was taken from the Wesleyan University Library. The Wesleyan Pharos: volume 40, number 11 - 03-13-1933 Professor Arthtur H. Simons director of the Twentieth Annual State High School Basketball Tournament. This is Simons' third year as director of this annual classic and he now has plans formulated to make this the largest and most successful tournament ever held under the auspices of West Virginia Wesleyan. The Annual West Virginia State High, School basketball Tournamenthad its beginning in 1914 when Elkins and Wheeling high achools were invited to settle their disputed claims to state scholastic basketball championship by meeting each other on the Wesleyan College gym floor. Elkins won the state championship that year by defeating Wheeling. The following year invitations were sent out to teams all over the state invitlng them to play here in an open tournament for the state title. Fourteen teams participated. From year to year the tournament grew rapidly. In 1924 seventy-two teams entered the annual meeting. Following up a plan devised for the purpose of-eliminating the severe physical strain necessary to produce a winner over a three-day period teams were divided by popular vote into two divisions known as A and B. Teams in these divisions played for different titles. This plan taxed the system, and the State High School Athletic Association cooperated in bringing about a sectional toumament plan. This was tried out in 1925, the divisions A and B being taken over into each sectional, tournament. By this plan 16 division A and B teams played In the 1925 toumament. The plan, however, was held to bring 16 teams admittedly weaker (Division'B), to the state toumey than the 16 others of Division A. After that, all teams were thrown into one division In the sectional tournaments. Winners and runners-up became eligible tp play for the state title. In addition the State Association selected two teams from each section,

Turmoil filled this season. Van Laanen resigns mid season. Morgantown was inadvertently left out of state Tournament because Kingwood sent two Western Union telegraphs saying it could not attend and the Director thought the second message was from Morgantown. It was fixed and Morgantown got into the tournament. Three starters were kicked off the team near the end of the season for team violations but MHS still showed good in the tournament.

New MHS dedicated. The Arthur Clyde gym opened. This was14th annual state tourney to be held in Buckhannon. Morgantown High School Coach Art Clyde refused to allow his team to particpate in the state tournament from 1927 until 1933 because the format made for teams to play 2 games in one day. He thought this to be too much strain on kids in a tournament atmosphere. He would blow his top if saw what kids are doing today.

Apparently for several years Morgantown High did not have the desire to participate in the State tournament. An article by Mr. Bill Hart in the March 16th, 1931 The Dominion News page six, agreed. I had wondered why no post season records were listed in the school yearbooks from 1928 to 1933.

20th straight year state tourney is held in Buckhannon. State tournament goes from 16 sectionals to 8 regions with 4 sectionals in each region. First annual Monongalia-Taylor County basketball tournament was held.
This is the first time MHS has participated in the sectional and regional tournament since 1927 because Coach Clyde is not happy with the state tournament format. In 1933 Coach Clyde protests a one day regional format to the state athletic association and wins protest. It becomes a 2 day affair in Fairmont. UHS moves into its new school at the top of North Price Street in the fall of 1933.

Nathan Adrian, First Team All-State Adrian becomes the first 2 time All State Player in MHS history. He is the first player to accept a scholarship to play for WVU since Jay Jacobs in 1956. This was possibly the best team MHS has had in several years and had a good chance of making it to the finals of the state tournament but in the middle of the season their top two scorers Nathan Adrian (broken foot), and Austin Agnew (acl knee, out for season) suffered injuries. Adrian returned in time to lead them to the state tournament.
